Boiler Replacement Following Annual Service in Reading

We visited a regular customer to carry out their annual boiler service. Unfortunately, during the visit it became clear that the existing boiler, which was more than 25 years old, had reached the end of its serviceable life. With replacement now the most practical option, we provided a quotation for a modern, more efficient boiler.

The Problem

The original intention was simply to complete the customer’s annual boiler service and keep the existing heating system running reliably.

However, the boiler failed and, given its age of more than 25 years, further investment in the old appliance was no longer considered a sensible long term option. We discussed the situation with the customer and provided a quotation for replacement rather than carrying out work that could prove uneconomical.

The customer accepted the quotation and we arranged to return the following week to complete the installation.

The Solution

We removed the old boiler and prepared the existing heating system for its replacement.

The installation required alterations to the existing pipework as well as a new opening through the external wall for the boiler flue. Due to the height of the property, the external installation work was safely completed using a tower.

Once the new boiler was installed, we flushed the heating system and added Hive heating controls, giving the customer greater control over their heating and helping them use the new system efficiently.

The Outcome

The customer now has a modern and efficient boiler replacing an appliance that had provided more than 25 years of service.

The heating system has been thoroughly flushed, the installation adapted for the new boiler and Hive controls added to provide convenient control over heating and temperature.

Most importantly, replacement was only recommended after the existing boiler had failed and its age made continued investment impractical, giving a regular Nick Parris Heating Services customer a reliable long-term solution rather than simply replacing an appliance unnecessarily.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a boiler typically last

A well maintained boiler can often provide reliable service for 10 to 15 years or longer. As a boiler gets older, however, efficiency can decline and replacement parts may become harder or more expensive to obtain. Regular servicing helps us monitor its condition and identify developing problems.

Can regular boiler servicing extend the life of my boiler?

Regular servicing can help keep a boiler operating safely and efficiently while identifying smaller issues before they develop into more serious problems. It also gives us an opportunity to assess the general condition of an older boiler and advise on any maintenance that may be required.

Does an old boiler always need replacing?

No. We do not recommend replacing a boiler simply because of its age. If an older boiler remains safe, reliable and economical to maintain, continued servicing may be perfectly reasonable. Replacement is normally considered when reliability, efficiency, repair costs or parts availability make further investment difficult to justify.

What happens if a problem is found during my annual boiler service?

If we identify a problem, we will explain what we have found and discuss the available options. Where a repair is practical, this may be all that is required. If the boiler has reached the end of its serviceable life, as happened with this 25 year old appliance, we can discuss replacement options and provide a quotation.
