Boiler and Hot Water System Upgrade in Reading

We were asked to replace an ageing boiler and hot water system at a property in the university area of Reading. The existing boiler was more than 30 years old, with the heating and hot water systems becoming increasingly slow and inefficient.

The Problem

The original hot water cylinder was located in an upstairs airing cupboard and lacked insulation, while the existing stored-water system also delivered a relatively poor hot water flow rate throughout the house.

The property relied on an outdated boiler and a traditional hot water storage system that were no longer delivering the efficiency or performance the homeowner wanted.

As well as the ageing boiler, the uninsulated hot water cylinder was losing heat unnecessarily and the existing water storage arrangement resulted in poor hot water pressure. The system also included redundant cold water storage tanks in the loft, taking up valuable space.

Our Assessment

We recommended replacing the old boiler and hot water cylinder with a modern Worcester Bosch heating system and an unvented hot water cylinder.

Moving the new equipment into the loft provided an opportunity to remove the existing boiler from the kitchen and free up the airing cupboard upstairs. It also allowed us to simplify the old stored water arrangement by removing the redundant cold water tanks from the loft.

The Solution

We removed the original boiler from the kitchen, the hot water cylinder from the airing cupboard and the redundant cold water storage tanks from the loft.

A new Worcester Bosch boiler and horizontal unvented hot water cylinder were then installed towards the rear of the loft.

The new installation also required a new gas supply pipe. We ran this from the front garden through the hallway and cupboards before taking it up to the rear loft area to supply the new boiler.

Careful planning of the new pipework allowed us to relocate the heating and hot water equipment while keeping the installation practical and unobtrusive throughout the property.

The Outcome

The homeowner now has a significantly more efficient central heating and hot water system.

Replacing the old stored water arrangement with an unvented hot water cylinder means the property now benefits from mains pressure hot water throughout the house, providing a substantial improvement in both pressure and flow rate.

The new Worcester Bosch boiler also provides a modern, efficient replacement for the original 30-year-old system, while relocating the boiler and cylinder has freed up useful space in both the kitchen and upstairs airing cupboard.

Frequently asked questions

Can an old boiler and hot water system be replaced at the same time?

Yes. In this Reading property, we replaced both the boiler and the existing hot water cylinder as part of a complete heating and hot water upgrade. Replacing ageing components together can provide an opportunity to improve efficiency, performance and the overall design of the system.

What are the benefits of an unvented hot water cylinder?

An unvented hot water cylinder is supplied directly from the mains rather than relying on a cold water storage tank. Subject to suitable incoming mains pressure and flow, this can provide significantly improved hot water pressure and flow rates throughout the home.

Can a boiler and hot water cylinder be installed in a loft?

Yes, providing the loft and installation meet the relevant requirements. For this project, we installed a new Worcester Bosch boiler and horizontal unvented hot water cylinder in the loft, freeing up valuable space in the kitchen and upstairs airing cupboard.

Can you remove old water tanks when upgrading a heating system?

In many properties, yes. When converting from a traditional stored water arrangement to a suitable unvented system, redundant cold water storage tanks may no longer be required. On this project, we removed the old tanks from the loft as part of the complete system upgrade.
